NBM Parking Structures Ramp Model: 2009 - NBM
This interactive model was created for the NBM's 'House of Cars' exhibit about the history of parking garages. It's based on the dimensions of a standard Matchbox car, although the ceiling height between floors is exaggerated so you can reach your hand inside. The double-helix ramp is made from dozens of U-shaped wedges with specific angles on each side. When glued together they make a gentle spiral, but making them all identical was really tough. I glued them up as 1/4 turn sections, sanded them smooth, and then installed them into the vertical pillar assembly, with a strip of fiberglass along the road-deck for added strength. To get the cars to run down the curved ramp easily I also needed to line the outer wall of the chute with teflon tape.
